Mother Nature is a very cruel mistress

On the surface, she seems nice and provide an abundance of short-term pleasure, but the long-term reality is unsettling at best.
This latest bit from Nature strikes me as an example of woke scientists who are woefully ignorant of economics. Or of history, prosperity and HUMAN nature for that matter.
It still strikes me as incongruous that though six million people may have died from/with Covid, we are still adding 80 million people a year to the global population, with almost all of that growth coming from poor, 'developing' countries with meager healthcare systems and increasing life spans while the 'rich' countries have declining birth rate, increasing levels of obesity, decreasing life spans and budget-busting 'healthcare' (really, medical treatment) expenditures. Some of the explanation can be found in those trends yet, as I found in writing my managing sustainable development manuscript during my full-year sabbatical about six years ago, Mother NATURE is more likely to kill us than to sustain us, unless human-produced science and technology intervenes with computers, thermostats, medicines and vaccines, dams, better home construction, education/knowledge, weather forecasting, HVAC, etc. I recall Time magazine -- about fifty years ago when it was more of a must read than a musty online read (time.com) -- claiming that the greatest invention of the twentieth century was......air conditioning.
Thomas Malthus got it terribly wrong. Rather than starve ourselves to death, we are more like to be overeating ourselves to death. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.
