Contrast the way the Wall Street Journal portrays the situation in India with the data.

The facts don't align with the headlines. The New York Post picture is eleven months old and it is from a gas leak, not Covid.

The number of positive tests does not equate to deaths. Bottom line is that positive PCR tests are exaggerating the situation, not informing policy makers. And per capita mortality in India is a very small fraction of what Europe and the United Kingdom experienced. And India never had a serious 'spike' even without a serious lockdown.
The key measure, infection mortality rate (IFR), remains low. In the USA, 0.13%. In Europe, 0.08%. In no lockdown Sweden, 0.03%. The global estimate has declined from 0.23% last year to 0.15% today. Lockdowns, masks don't make a difference.
