Fauci v Fauci

Covid v AIDS. What follows are some random thoughts on the differences and the devil in the details of these two pandemics united by several threads, including Dr. Fauci, a conflict between a pandemic that never really was and one that has not ended in forty years, both battles managed by Dr Fauci.

There have been fewer than four million global Covid deaths versus over 70 million AIDS deaths. On an annual basis, the death counts are similar, although with an expanding global population, the AIDS death rate is probably higher than Covid.
Airborne transmission versus transfer of fluids. While Covid is early transmitted and more highly infectious than AIDS, the infection fatality rates for Covid appear to be lower than that of AIDS. There are probably over a billion people who have contracted -- and conquered -- the Covid virus, often without the use of specialized drugs or intensive hospital treatment. With AIDS, you have it for life. With Covid you develop and strengthen your immunity to the virus; with AIDS, the virus stays with you in terms of a compromised immune system.
Testing. Had Fauci advocated testing for AIDS as has done with Covid, he would have had an insurrection. In fact, he sort of did. in the 1980's, the high prevalence of AIDS among gays (akin to the high death rate among the elderly with Covid), led to recommendations of extensive testing of the gay community. The backlash from the gay community probably did a better job of advancing 'gay rights' than had all the previous politicians and policies to date.
Misguided 'safeguards.' Fauci admitted he lied when he told people to not wear masks, saying that he feared a run on masks by the general public when the medical community needed them more. But he never rally made the differential between effective and ineffective masks. Other than the N-95 masks, with a highly stylized protocol, most commercially available masks had little value in stemming the spread of Covid, just as did exhortations to use condoms when many refused to use them nonetheless or used them improperly. ‘Stifled’ by an often ineffective or defective mask versus an unused or misused condom.
Politics beat science. Politicians advocated lockdowns for Covid versus promoting gay rights to respond to the 'stigma' of AIDS and the closing of sex clubs disguised as bath houses in many gay districts. As he has done today, Fauci surrendered science to politics, as when he refused to decry unmasked, crowds political protests in the summer of 2020, just as progressive s politicians used the mantra "mostly peaceful" to describe 5,000 protests, 700 of which were violent. The irony is that the progressive left disingenuously claim that they 'follow the science' when clearly they doing nothing of the sort, apparently unable to distinguish politics from the scientific method.
Confirmation bias. The media did a very good, i.e., deadly well done, job of choosing 'experts' to confirm their narrative, rather than to report the science. So-called scientists achieved hero status while science was filed away. Just as policeman and firefighters became heroes at 9/1, those 'experts' with an unsubstantiated basis for advice-giving became media heroes, darlings. Rather than an investigative press, we have had a fawning fourth estate.
AIDS rarely killed anyone directly. Rather, as an "immune deficiency" virus, its presence allowed other lethal attacks on one's body, Contrast this with Covid, which preyed upon "immunity compromised" individuals, meaning people who were old, sick, obese, demented, or otherwise vulnerable. Never fully acknowledged by the Covid mandarins, Covid did not produce most of the co-morbidities that accompanied a 'Covid' death, while that is basically all that AIDS did, i.e., opens the body to the actual cause of death, co-morbidities. I can't help but recall one very dishonest Oshkosh doctor who claimed that the co-morbidities accompanying Covid were caused by Covid when, in fact, the majority of Covid co-morbidities were present before Covid. The correlation is not causation conundrum still seems to elude some doctors, experts.
